Best measurement programming languages

Digital marketing measurement requires some knowledge of a few languages…..quite a few in fact but some are relatively easy to get to grips with.

Here’s my top list in order of priority:

You’re going to need to know these two to some degree. You’re not going to have to build a website but you do need to know how to at least read HTML & CSS. I highly recommend this book which guides through building a basic website:

If you don’t want to spend any money then head over to:

A little bit of javascript will go a long way especially if you’re doing custom tracking in Google Tag Manager. The web is primarily built on HTML, CSS & Javascript so make these your top priority.

Best resource to get started:

Second to analytics access is a request for access to any backend databases and to analyse data here you’re going need knowledge of SQL which is actually very easy to learn.

Best resource to get started:

Used frequently in Google Tag Manager custom tracking and Google Optimize for some changes. In theory, Javascript can do everything JQuery can but JQuery is easier to use in my experience.

A great resource to learn JQuery:

Used for scraping data otherwise unavailable, automating tasks and connecting platforms. Python is easier to learn than Javascript in my experience.

Best free resource to get started:

So there you have it, a little bit of knowledge in these languages is going to open a world of possibilities when it comes to measurement, tracking & insight. I usually spend some time every month trying to increase my experience with these languages particularly Javascript & Python which are much deeper subjects than the others.
